Site rules

Anyone is welcome to contribute to this website, however there are few rules you'll need to keep in mind when submitting your treasure or commenting on someone else's.

Using content


  • You may browse, download, view, print, copy on to hard disk of your computer and use any material from the website for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. Any other use requires the State Library of Victoria's prior written consent.
  • You may not adapt, alter or create a derivative work from any site content except for your own personal, non-commercial use.

Registering


  • You must register to contribute to the website.
  • You must register using your real name. Impersonating another person (including public figures) by adopting an identical name or by claiming to be that person is not permitted, nor is using a fabricated name. (Please note: your real name will not appear on the website.)
  • You must supply a valid email address so you can receive an email with instructions on how to confirm your registration. (Please note: your email address will not appear on the website.)
  • You must provide a nickname of your choice and a place name (your city, suburb or town) which will appear on the website next to your contribution. Offensive or inappropriate nicknames must not be used. URLs, personal contact details or email addresses must not be included.
  • You are only allowed one login.
  • You may register on behalf of an organisation, school or community group; however, we require the organisation's telephone number or postal address so we can verify that you are authorised to represent the organisation.
  • You must agree to the terms and conditions which govern the use of this website before you register.

Contributing


  • Descriptions, comments and tags must be in English.
  • Abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening or sexually-explicit material must not be submitted.
  • Your contribution (words and pictures) must be your own original work, or you must seek the permission of the copyright owner to use their work.
  • Contributions that are culturally insensitive, or offensive to others on racial, ethnic, religious or other grounds; or are not suitable for children should not be contributed.
  • Comments made about someone else's contribution to the site must be constructive and polite, and not made with disruptive intent.
  • Repeated postings of the same contributions will not be accepted.
  • You may not post any advertising or promotional materials, spam, chain letters or similar.
  • You may not post any material that contains software viruses or any other computer code, files or programs designed to interrupt, restrict, destroy, limit the functionality of, or compromise the integrity of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment.
  • URLs (website addresses) added to the site must not contain anything that presents access or safety problem, or is offensive or unlawful.
  • No personal information about yourself or anyone else, such as telephone numbers, home address, age, name, etc may be submitted as part of your contribution.
  • Children should have the permission of their parent or guardian before making a contribution to this site.

Moderation


  • All contributions to this website will be subject to review by State Library of Victoria staff before being published to the live website. The Library reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to choose whether to include or not include submissions for use online.
  • The Library reserves the right to edit or modify any submissions, or remove any contribution at any time, for any reason.
  • Contributions that include the following will be automatically rejected:

    • swear words or offensive language
    • personal information such as contact details
    • abusive or threatening comments about others
    • allegations about anyone that could harm their reputation
    • anything that will intentionally cause offense to others
    • material not suitable for children
    • computer code or URLs (website addresses) (except where expressly permitted by the site)
    • any item believed to be stolen, or illegally obtained or held
    • advertisements, promotional material or spam
    • contributions submitted under an offensive or inappropriate nickname.
    • any other material deemed by the Library as unsuitable.
  • We may use your real name and email address to contact you to verify any information related to your contribution during the moderation process.

Alerting the moderator


  • You are encouraged to alert the moderator to any contributions that you believe break the site rules.
  • You should complete the 'Alert the Moderator' form providing details of your concerns.
  • We will investigate legitimate complaints made about any contributions and advise the person making the complaint of the outcome.
  • The State Library of Victoria reserves the right to remove any contributions during the investigation, and reinstate removed content.

Breaking the rules


  • If you deliberately break any of the rules, you will be banned as a user and your contribution/s will be deleted from the system.
  • If the moderator deems that you have broken the rules unintentionally, you will be sent an email which informs you why your registration or contribution has been rejected. You may then resubmit your registration or contribution with the appropriate changes made. The email will include a warning that continuing to break the rules may result in action being taken against your membership. This may include the removal of your contributions or suspension of your membership and your ability to participate.
  • If you continue to submit offensive or inappropriate contributions to the website, and the State Library of Victoria considers such behaviour to be serious and/or repeated, we may use whatever information you have given us to stop any further infringements.
  • If your contribution/s infringes any law, is contributed with the intention of committing or promoting an illegal act, you will be banned from the website and we will pass on information to the police.
  • If you use the 'Alert the Moderator' form with disruptive intent, you will be banned from the site.
